D-Day Walk
StartJun 16
EndJun 16
Aviation heritage enthusiasts can join an afternoon walk at Twyford Wood near Colsterworth, launch pad for a top secret American pre-invasion strike on the eve of D-Day. Join us on the 16 June to hear a forgotten story of allied bravery tinged with American bravado. Seventy five years on, our experts will tell a largely forgotten story of how the huge former wartime airfield at RAF North Witham - Station 479 of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) - played a key role in the invasion of occupied Europe. At precisely 21.54 on 5 June 1944  the first of 20 Douglas C-47 Skytrain aircraft of lX Troop Carrier Command Pathfinder School took off carrying elite American Pathfinder troops, skimming the channel at 50ft to fly under enemy radar on their way to Normandy. They had spent months training behind armed security for the mission - to position Eureka radio signalling beacons and visual markers behind enemy lines. Hear how Pathfinder troops were lured into applying for a mission earning them the tag of ‘the suicide squad’ and the personal story of Captain Frank Lillyman, the first to jump, who earned a national citation for valour. Within the hour the invasion of Normandy was in full swing, with hundreds more C-47s of Troop Carrier Command taking off from Barkston Heath, Folkingham, Saltby, Fulbeck, Cottersmore and Spanhoe laden with troops and joined by more aircraft flying from bases in Southern England. The walk, organised by the visitor economy team at InvestSK, South Kesteven District Council’s growth and regeneration company, lasts around two and a half hour. It starts at 2.30pm from the main Twyford Wood car park, off the A151 Colsterworth to Bourne Road.

New Volunteer Orientation
StartJun 18
EndJun 18
Volunteers are vital to The Action Center’s success!!In 1968, The Action Center was formed by a group of volunteers concerned for struggling families in the community. Today, nearly half a century later, volunteers are still at the core of The Action Center. There are more than 40 unique volunteer opportunities that include direct participant interaction, behind the scenes tasks and special events, just to name a few. Opportunities fall into one-time or weekly formats and are available for individuals, families, and groups – there’s a match for everyone! In 2016, 4,734 individuals contributed 103,048 hours of service! Without them, The Action Center would have needed 80 additional staff members to meet the needs of the community! Check out this brief history of volunteerism at The Action Center. Our volunteers list “To Help Others” and “The Volunteer Team” as their top two reasons for volunteering with The Action Center. Volunteers produce a direct and immediate impact on the lives of our struggling neighbors every day. They create a vibrant and active volunteer community where they make new connections in a rewarding and supportive environment. Learn More! The first step to becoming a volunteer is to sign-up for a New Volunteer Orientation! For more information about Orientation, contact the Volunteer Manager at volunteer@theactioncenterco.org or 303.237.7704.

Reclaiming My Life After Loss - A Field Guide to Living with Grief & Love
StartJun 18
EndJun 18
The death of someone you love can turn your entire world on its head.  Your pain can feel overwhelming, your thoughts scattered and chaotic, your life can feel like it's in shambles. And sometimes even reaching out for support can leave you just feeling more misunderstood.  This is not a workshop on how to "fix" your grief. There's no way to "solve" death. But there is a way to make the weight feel a little less heavy, and the mind less chaotic. There is a way to work with supports, to feel a little more in control, and to reclaim your life in a world that doesn't understand what you're going through.  This is not transformation. It's learning to carry our pain and still be kind to ourselves. It's knowing that in and among that pain there is also space for beauty, meaning, and love. This is a field guide to living your life after the death of a loved one.  This is a free event. Just bring your journal or something to write in for two short (and optional) exercises. We'll talk about:The reality of the pain and struggle of grief. The myth of transformation (AKA - everything doesn't have to come out smelling like roses.)How everything in life can feel different and overwhelming, and how to stay safe. How to experiment, explore, and figure out your own survival guide. How to connect with meaning, mystery, and maybe grasp a bit of control among the chaos. How to face what's happened gently and safely, trust ourselves, our minds, and our bodies, and get the help we need.  Presented by Chas Neal, LPCC / Grief Counselor of The Neal Center for Counseling and Yoga Therapy.

Webinar: AI and Technology Shift in Local Government

StartJun 19
EndJun 19
Technology is the enabler to better service, no longer the channel. Customers and end users are already in the channel. We need to connect services, leverage partnerships and innovate to meet them there. We’ve chosen to integrate with Amazon Lex, to offer Jadu CXM users the ability to enable chatbots into their customer service offerings. We have worked with Northampton Borough Council in the early stages of research and development to ensure we implement Amazon Lex with local government at the forefront of our minds. Join us in this one hour webinar to find out why technology shift is important in Local Government. The webinar will be hosted by Mike Smart, Research & Development Engineer, Jadu. We get 300,000 calls a year, if we can automate even 20% of those – we have a saving of £250k per year with very little effort, before we even start to look at automating transactions.” Kevin White, Services Manager, Northampton Borough Council.  The webinar will be followed by a Q&A session. Participation is free, but capacity is limited, so please register to ensure your place.
